What is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy Illustration
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure which involves seeing the joint through a small camera. A small camera with a light source is inserted into the joint which allows close, detailed observation of the joint.

Surgeons can even repair some types of joint damage during arthroscopy. Some of the most common procedures done by arthroscopy are ligament reconstructions after sport injuries.

Recovery after arthroscopic surgery is generally quite easier. In general, the duration of stay in hospital for an arthroscopic surgery is one to two days.

Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgeries

Dr. Venkatdeep Mohan uses arthroscopy to diagnose and treat a range of shoulder related joint, tendon and ligament problems, such as Rotator cuff tears, dislocated shoulder, bankart repair, frozen shoulder and shoulder impingement. Below are some common shoulder related arthroscopic procedures performed by Dr. Venkatdeep.
1. Rotator Cuff Tear : The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that surround the ball-and-socket shoulder joint (shoulder joint). When the tendons of the rotator cuff have torn, this is called a rotator cuff tear. The rotator cuff is important in many routine activities, and when injured can cause severe pain.

2. Bankart Repair : Shoulder instability occurs when the ligaments and tendons that hold your arm to your shoulder are overstretched due to high energy trauma or sports injuries (repetitive arm motions). The dislocation of the shoulder joint anteriorly causes damage to glenoid labrum.

Dr. Venkatdeep performs arthroscopic Bankart Shoulder Repair where the worn out ligaments are re-attached to the proper place in the shoulder joint to restore normal function.

Arthroscopic Knee Surgeries

Dr. Venkatdeep Mohan uses arthroscopy to diagnose and treat a range of joint, tendon and ligament problems, such as Knee cap dislocation, Knee ligament tears & meniscal tears. Below are some common knee related arthroscopic procedures performed by Dr. Venkatdeep.
Knee anatomy
1. Knee Ligament tears : Ligament is a band of tissues that connects & hold your bones. There are four main ligaments around the knee joint as listed below. When any of these 4 ligaments has a tear, your knee joint becomes unstable and will buckle. You will experience pain & swelling in the joint area.

(a). Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), (b). Medial collateral ligament (MCL), (c). Lateral collateral ligament (LCL), (d). Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)

2. Meniscal Tears : The two cartilage that sits between your femur (thighbone) and tibia (shinbone) is called meniscus. It acts as a shock absorber and to transmit weight from one bone to another and thus keeps the knee stable. This meniscus cartilage can tear due to old age or due to any contact sports.

3. Kneecap Dislocation : Your kneecap can get dislocated due to various reasons which might be painful and prevent you from walking.

How do I prepare for surgery?

Most often arthroscopy surgeries are elective. Meaning, they are not an emergency procedure and can be planned well in advance.

At Prime Orthopedics, the counselling begins at the clinic, where Dr. Venkatdeep Mohan will take you through the whole course of surgery well in advance and have a detailed discussion of the outcomes and recovery.

Before getting the surgery a pre-surgical evaluation is done. This involves getting blood investigations, ECG and other medical tests and being evaluated by a physician prior to surgery. The anaesthetic team will also see you prior to surgery and discuss the type of anaesthesia which you will likely be getting. The surgical team will go through the steps of surgery and brief you about your post op period.

Post-operative rehabilitation will be taken care of by trained physiotherapists and be explained to you in detail. During your stay in the hospital the physiotherapy team will be seeing you twice a day and taking you through a rehab protocol tailor made for you.
